At Irlam Endowed Primary School, PE has a leading profile in ensuring that children leave our school in Year 6 with the competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. Our PE curriculum enables children to become independent and confident learners who can effectively lead activities. Throughout a child’s time at our school, they develop the understanding of how important physical activity is for our physical and emotional wellbeing. Making healthy lifestyle choices, developing competence in a broad range of physical activities and engaging in competitive sports are all fundamental aspects of our broad and balanced curriculum.
Curriculum Aims
Our PE curriculum is guided by the EYFS Early Learning Goals (ELGs) and the national curriculum programmes of study. These are listed below:
Early Learning Goals: Nursery (Ages 3 to 4)
- Continue to develop their movement, balancing, riding (scooters, trikes and bikes) and ball skills.
- Go up steps and stairs, or climb up apparatus, using alternate feet.
- Skip, hop, stand on one leg and hold a pose for a game like musical statues.
- Use large-muscle movements to wave flags and streamers, paint and make marks.
- Start taking part in some group activities which they make up for themselves, or in teams.
- Are increasingly able to use and remember sequences and patterns of movements which are related to music and rhythm.
- Match their developing physical skills to tasks and activities in the setting. For example, they decide whether to crawl, walk or run across a plank, depending on its length and width.
Early Learning Goals: Reception (Ages 3 to 4)
- Revise and refine the fundamental movement skills they have already acquired: rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, running, hopping, skipping, climbing
- Progress towards a more fluent style of moving, with developing control and grace.
- Develop the overall body strength, co-ordination, balance and agility needed to engage successfully with future physical education sessions and other physical disciplines including dance, gymnastics, sport and swimming.
- Use their core muscle strength to achieve a good posture when sitting at a table or sitting on the floor.
- Combine different movements with ease and fluency
- Confidently and safely use a range of large and small apparatus indoors and outside, alone and in a group.
- Develop overall body-strength, balance, co-ordination and agility
- Further develop and refine a range of ball skills including: throwing, catching, kicking, passing, batting, and aiming.
- Develop confidence, competence, precision and accuracy when engaging in activities that involve a ball.
- Know and talk about the different factors that support their overall health and wellbeing: regular physical activity, healthy eating, toothbrushing, sensible amounts of ‘screen time’, having a good sleep routine, being a safe pedestrian
National Curriculum Programme of Study aims

- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives.

Our curriculum is delivered by EdStart Coaches who are a leading sports provider within the North West. The curriculum is carefully crafted for children to build skills and knowledge cumulatively over their time at Irlam Endowed. The PE curriculum overview can be seen below:

Awards and Achievements
Irlam Endowed Primary School has been awarded two prestigious awards for our PE and School Sports Programme:
- Since 2013, the school has achieved the AfPE award with distinction.
- The school has also achieved the ‘Your School Games’ Gold and Platinum Award since 2012.
We are very proud of our school’s long standing achievements in sport and PE and value the recognition both these awards have brought to the school community.
Enrichment
In order to enhance our curriculum offer for PE, we offer a range of enrichment activities to complement our school’s curriculum offer. Some of these opportunities include:
- Competing in cluster events with other schools in the locality
- Competing in Salford sport events
- After school clubs with sports coaches
- Transition sports activities with local secondary schools

At Irlam Endowed Primary School we aim for a high quality geography curriculum which inspires in our pupils a natural curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills; and for the children to develop a love for geography. Furthermore, we aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

- Use all their senses in hands on exploration of natural materials.
- Explore collections of materials with similar and/or different properties.

- Understand the key features of the life cycle of a plant and animal.

National Curriculum Programme of Study aims
- develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.
- understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.
- are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
- collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes.
- interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
Curriculum Overview
Our curriculum at Irlam Endowed is carefully crafted for children to build and develop their knowledge and skills of important places and areas of the world. They will develop the knowledge to be able to name and locate key towns and cities, countries, continents, seas and oceans as well as key regions such as the equator and northern and southern hemispheres.

At Irlam Endowed Primary School, Music is a subject that enriches children’s lives and education with many benefits including improved motor skills, memory and co-ordination as well as having a positive impact on language, memory and confidence. We understand the value and enrichment that music brings to the life of a child and we recognise that music, as a practical subject, should be an integral part of a rich, broad and balanced curriculum.
Curriculum Aims
Early Learning Goals: Nursery (Ages 3 to 4)
- Listen with increased attention to sounds.
- Respond to what they have heard, expressing their thoughts and feelings.
- Remember and sing entire songs.
- Sing the pitch of a tone sung by another person (‘pitch match’).
- Sing the melodic shape (moving melody, such as up and down, down and up) of familiar songs.
- Create their own songs or improvise a song around one they know.
- Play instruments with increasing control to express their feelings and ideas
Early Learning Goals: Reception (Ages 4 to 5)
- Listen attentively, move to and talk about music, expressing their feelings and responses.
- Watch and talk about dance and performance art, expressing their feelings and responses.
- Sing in a group or on their own, increasingly matching the pitch and following the melody.
- Develop storylines in their pretend play.
- Explore and engage in music making and dance, performing solo or in groups
National Curriculum Programme of Study aims:
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
Curriculum Overview
At Irlam Endowed, we use the KAPOW scheme for teaching music throughout the schThe Kapow Primary music scheme is first and foremost to help children to feel that they are musical and to develop a life-long love of music. They focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. The curriculum introduces children to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching children to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities.

We have achieved the Music Mark award for the past three years as recognition of the work that we do to promote music in school.
Enrichment
In order to enhance our curriculum offer for Music, we offer a range of enrichment activities to complement our school’s curriculum offer. Some of these opportunities include:
- Specialist teachers from MAPAS (Music and Performing Arts Service) offer private lessons for children to learn instruments.
- Each year, our Year 4 class learn an instrument during their weekly ‘Wider Opportunities’ lessons and this culminates in the children having the opportunity to play at The Lowry Theatre during the summer term.
- Transition links with local secondary schools
- We put on productions at Christmas and also in summer to allow children the opportunity to perform to an audience.
- We introduce children to a range of composers and music types in assemblies through linking music with the theme of the assemblies.
Progression across the curriculum
